Save the Date for IPTW-ITES 2009
August 25-29, 2009, Leadville, ColoradoThe 13th annual International Preservation Trades Workshop will be held by the Preservation Trades Network in partnership with the Colorado Mountain College Historic Preservation program. The 3rd International Trades Education Symposium will be held in conjuction with IPTW 2009. These combined events will take place in the spectacular natural setting of the Rocky Mountains and will provide a unique opportunity for tradespeople, educators, preservationists, students and others from the US and abroad to exchange experiences, learn skills and find common ground in the application of the skilled trades to conservation of the built environment. Workshops, "hands on" demonstrations of preservation techniques and symposium sessions will take place in historic Leadville, Colorado and at the Hayden Ranch, an intact example of a high country ranch and agricultural operation which operated from 1872-1947. Colorado Mountain College purchased the ranch for use as a laboratory, woodworking shop and classroom space for students in the preservation trades program, and it promises to be a remarkable venue for IPTW-ITES events.

Preliminary Schedule of Events
Historic Log Construction Workshop - August 23rd – 27th
This workshop, which requires preregistration, will teach participants how historic log
buildings can be relocated for adaptive re-use. Participants will learn how to document,
unstack, relocate, repair and re-stack traditional 19th century Colorado mountain cabins.
Historic Brick Masonry Cleaning Workshop - August 25th & 26th
This workshop, which takes place at the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in
Leadville, involves learning what is involved is safely removing fluorescence from brick
masonry and understanding it’s causes and prevention.
Historic Cemetery Conservation Workshop - August 26th
This workshop, which takes place at the historic Leadville Cemetery, will introduce
participants to the practices involved is safely cleaning and repairing historic masonry
gravestones and cemetery markers.
International Trades Education Symposium (ITES) - August 25–27
Presentations by educators, students and professional will be based on the four major
topic areas:
1. Shifting Sands - Labor History of the Building Trades from primitive structures to the
present. What we can learn from the history of the building trades and how we find its
impact on culture today.
2. Solid Land - Remembering the reasons why the building trades matter.
3. A Place to Build - Defining the challenge of the 21st Century for trade based
education and industry. Practical application to the development of standards and
practices for teaching traditional trades methods and building preservation/conservation
technology.
4. Building Foundations - Building a new culture for building craft education and
industry. Defining pathways for trade education in the 21st century and the potential for
development of skills exchange, partnership efforts and collaboration on community,
regional, national and international levels.
International Preservation Trades Workshop (IPTW) - August 27-29
Preservation trades demonstrations involving lead and metal working, stained glass
window restoration, decorative plaster and painting, stone conservation and more will
take place at the historic Hayden Ranch just outside of historic Leadville.
