About IPTW 2008
The 12th International Preservation Trades Workshop will be the first held in New England, and will be held in partnership with the Vermont Granite Museum and Stone Arts School, and the Preservation Education Institute and Historic Windsor. IPTW 2008 will take place at the Jones Brothers Company granite shed, home of the Vermont Granite Museum and site of the Stone Arts School. The Jones Brothers Company was founded in 1882 as a monument granite operation in Boston, Massachusetts, and expanded to include a manufacturing plant and quarry in Barre, Vermont. Once considered to be "the largest granite manufacturing plant in the world," the Jones Brothers Company had over 600 employees and occupied 100,000 square feet of operational space until it closed in 1975. Built in 1895, The original 30,000 square feet building is a straight granite shed design with two overhead cranes that were originally powered by a dam and turbines from the adjacent Stevens Branch of the Winooski River. The building has clerestory lighting from almost two hundred windows and will be a perfect venue for the demonstration based "hands on" nature of the International Preservation Trades Workshops. The building is designated as a significant historic site by the state's Division for Historic Preservation, and was named by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a recipient of a "Save America's Treasures" grant. |
After celebrating the 10th anniversary IPTW 2007 in partnership with the NPS Historic Preservation Training Center, and HPTC's 30th anniversary, IPTW 2008 will give the preservation trades community an opportunity to honor another significant milestone - the 25th anniversary of the Preservation Education Institute. Make plans now to attend what promises to be a very special opportunity to share in the knowledge and skills of the traditional trades in the remarkable community of Barre, Vermont where the traditional trades are a living and vital presence. Highlights of this IPTW will include the presentation of the 2008 Askins Achievement Award, the annual PTN Live Auction, music and social events and much more.

As PTN enters its second decade of bringing together traditional trades people, preservation specialists and friends from many countries we have decided to make it easier for the tribes to gather. All of us faced with the challenges of the current economy realize the value that comes from attending the IPTW, but that doesn't help ease the pain of filling up the old Ford pickup at today's gas prices so we've reduced the price of registration instead!
Every full IPTW registration includes all workshop sessions and tours, the Askins Achievement Award Reception and annual PTN Live Auction, and the PTN live music venue. Workshop lunches are not included, but can be purchased onsite from some outstanding local venders at moderate cost. Workshop participants are also encouraged to enjoy the many excellent local restaurants and gathering places.
IPTW 2008 will be not only be one of the best ever for students and professional alike, but it is happening in a beautiful family friendly part of the world with plenty of lodging options including camping in the piney woods of Vermont. Camping will be available at the workshop site. In the evening you can sit by the campfire with friends and family and talk about the day's activities or enjoy the nightlife of beautiful Barre, and PTN is helping you get there by helping pay for the gas with the lowest registration costs of any IPTW, and an early registration discount!
